Rebel belle book5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Most female characters are some form of warrior or authority figure while most plot-relevant male characters either die early or are being protected. If you’re looking for something deep and meaningful, this is not the book for you. While the book is subtly subverting reader expectations (dude in distress instead of a damsel in distress), it’s not obviously so. The latter has a bigger feminist agenda than the former, and I am so glad Hawkins chose that direction. The idea of Southern Belle Paladins could go one of two ways: a young woman’s serious plight to defy the patriarchy, or a young woman unknowingly defies the patriarchy with teenage wit and eye rolling. Now Harper has to figure out what these mysterious powers mean, what they have to do with David, and how it all relates to Cotillion, the debutante coming out gala at the end of the year. That is, until she is imbued with magical powers and tasked with protecting David Stark, of all people. ![]() Head cheerleader, leader of the Student Council, Homecoming Queen, and loved by everyone in town–especially her steady boyfriend whom she dreams of marrying. ![]()

In the process, the Lombards became a major thorn in the side of the Byzantine Empire or the Eastern Roman Empire and its capital Constantinople. One of the smaller tribes from the Migration Period, the Lombards fought their way across Europe before settling on the northern part of the Italian Peninsula, where they would establish a powerful kingdom that grew rapidly. From the seafaring Vikings to the militaristic Saxons, and all the way to the Cherusci and their allies who stood in the path of Rome, the Germanic peoples were many and always proud. ![]() From their oldest roots, they developed into iconic ethnic groups that were instrumental in the future of the world as we know it. ![]() As the Roman Empire crumbled, the history of the ancient world was undoubtedly marked and shaped by more than one powerful Germanic tribe. ![]()

The Road to Jerusalem by Jan Guillou5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() TLDR, it's not what you're expecting, it's better. We might get a France every now and again, but this is an incredibly well written book about medieval SWEDEN. Even Christian Cameron had to make his protagonists English, even though theyre barely in England. ![]() Vikings, English Archers, English Knights. I'm an American who knows more about Crecy than Gettysburg because historical fiction writers(and consumers, I imagine) only seem care about English history. And most importantly ITS NOT ABOUT ENGLAND. "They don't even get to Jerusalem til the end!", to which I answer: the book is called "the ROAD TO JERUSALEM and not "WE GOT TO JERUSALEM EARLY" That person sold me a book. I believe somebody was complaining on here about a "misleading title". I never realized how universally atheist new books are becoming, and having just a good guy priest, not a former badass(there is one of these, though), not secretly working against the protagonist, or whatever trope that's going around, is ironically refreshing. It's a very positive and more importantly to me NOT PREACHY view into Christian philosophy, at least thats how I see it. Went looking for trashy historical fiction.Īnd I got this. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Finally, the conclusion will weigh up the results drawn from the discussion and assess Thucydides’ place in International Relations scholarship. Then the arguments for and the arguments against its inclusion in International Relations scholarship will be considered. In this review I will first look at the content of the text, its tone, and its intention as Thucydides states it. ![]() ![]() However, scholars such as Gilpin (1984), who argues that the history is indeed located in the realist tradition, oppose this view and defend the realist possession of Thucydides. Welch (2003), Garst (1989), and others have argued that Thucydides has been hijacked and used as a mouthpiece to express and justify views that he not only didn’t imply in his work, but may have outright disagreed with. Recently however, certain scholars have begun to doubt the realist commandeering of this ancient writing. Indeed, while reading his History of the Peloponnesian War, it is not hard to see how so many theorists have appropriated his work as an example of the everlasting realist qualities inherent in politics. Thucydides is often cited as the father of realism in International Relations. ![]()

Cool for the summer book5/21/2023 ![]() In recent years, MCPL commissioned a study that proved that participating in our Summer Library Program not only protected against the slide, but actually helped children improve their skills. MCPL has been committed to helping combat the summer slide for decades. As you may know, teachers frequently spend the first several weeks of every school year catching students up from where they left off in the spring. Reading at the Library in the summer is not only a great way to avoid the heat it can be important in helping combat the “summer slide” (learning loss that occurs while kids are out of the classroom for several months). This may sound odd to people who have never lived in a world without central air conditioning (especially these days), but escaping the heat of our house for the library was as much of an exciting excursion as it was a relief, allowing me to happily read books and participate in the Summer Library Program. Finding refuge from the summer heat at the library is something I did all through my childhood and early adult years. Every year, when the summer sun heats up the day, a very strong memory returns to me. ![]()

Walt disney by bob thomas5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Older brothers Herb and Ray left family due to Elias’ tyrannical nature and soon after Roy left too.Father Elias had many misadventures in business and was a stern man.Ancestors were from France and last name was Isigny.Had a natural progression, moving the audience from spectators to participants.Disney possessed a remarkable skill for drawing the best from those who worked with him and had an uncanny capacity for reaching the human heart. When he dropped an idea, he didn’t expect you to pick it up where he left it, you were supposed to move a couple of steps beyond Little patience for those whose thinking was earthbound. He seemed to consider his time limited, and his impatience to get things done sometimes made him hard to work for.“I want Disneyland to be a place where parents can bring their children – or come by themselves and have a good time”.Fair man but little patience for anything bad or weak.Mickey and Walt were inextricable – Walt’s personality was completely reflected in Mickey’s.Very little retrospection, his visionary eye was always set on the future.Disney put his name on everything so that people knew that when they saw ‘Walt Disney’ on a picture, they would know that meant good, family entertainment.Didn’t want to be devious unless constructive in some fashion. ![]()

Nights yoneda kou5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() "Reply" is the longest and most realistic. It's a cute story, well-conveyed, and ends happily for everyone.Īlso: introduced me to the band Ellegarden. As he spends time with Usui he develops feelings for him. Taking pity on the shy Usui, he decides to help him get together with Nakaya. Poised Kugo sees a quieter classmate watching him and his hot, popular friend Nakaya. There is one use of the word fuck to upset parents who think their kids don't know that word already otherwise this would be perfect for a YA anthology. "Emotion Spectrum" in contrast is an almost totally PG high school love story. This feels like it ought to be the first half of a longer story. One thing I did find unusual was that it ended ambiguously, with the narc apparently rejecting his love interest until he was willing to find an honest career. ![]() The titular "NightS" is kind of like a summer action blockbuster, a not terribly convincing set-up with drug trafficking and law enforcement pursuit functioning mainly as a backdrop for hot actors characters bantering and having Hollywood sex (you know, the kind where everyone in in sync as to what they want, gets out of their clothes gracefully, is toned and flexible, and none of the poses look weird to the observer). ![]() They differ in length, genre, and rating. Other than the m/m element these short stories don't have a ton in common. Kou Yoneda's art is excellent, especially when it comes to subtle expressions. Except for the first story, these are ordinary people in realistic situations. ![]()
